TC1/TMI1

The combined skill sets equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to manage and implement traffic control in Temporary Traffic Management Category 1 environments, including Urban Streets and Low Volume Rural Roads, as outlined in the Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management.

Curriculum

Focus on response techniques for unforeseen situations. This lesson covers steps to quickly adjust traffic plans during emergencies, ensuring safety and minimizing disruption in high-pressure scenarios.

  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Have Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills at ACSF Level 2 or above.
  • Must hold the unit 'CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry' or its equivalent unit.
    (Accepted Course Codes and Names: CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry OR
    CPCCOHS1001A – Work Safely in the Construction Industry).
    A physical white card alone cannot be accepted as evidence; a Statement of Attainment (SOA) with the required
    unit of competency is mandatory.
  • Bring your own PPE (including steel-capped boots, a broad-brimmed hat, eye protection, gloves,
    long pants, and a high-visibility shirt/vest/jacket).

All students are required to complete a minimum of 20 logged hours of vocational placement for Traffic Controller (TC).
This involves performing 20 hours of stop/slow bat operations or using a Portable Traffic Control Device (PTCD)
on a live road with a licensed traffic control company. In addition, students must complete three (3) different set-ups
based on Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) and Traffic Guidance Schemes (TGS) relevant to their working conditions
for Traffic Management Implementers (TMI) after completing the course.
All placements must be supervised and are unpaid.

TC1 and TMI1 post-course requirements must be completed within six (6) months of the final day of the formal course.
Post-course TMI set-ups may take between 1 and 2 hours each to complete.

NOTE: During work placement, learners are required to provide their own PPE,
including a two-way handheld radio.

NOTE: Once the vocational placement is completed, TC and TMI assessments must be
conducted by a qualified trainer/assessor to obtain the Statement of Attainment.
Assessment sessions are available monthly and can be booked by contacting the office.
